Moiseyev Ballet Comes To Hungary, 6 - 10 December
The name of Igor Moisevey (born in 1906 in Kiev) became well-known by the style named after him, which he created by alloying the dances of different peoples with the elements of traditional ballet. He learnt dancing in the studio of the Great Theatre in Moscow. In 1924 he was already dancing in the Bolsoi, then became solo dancer and later ballet master. In the 1920’s and 30’s he wandered around the country by feet and on horse, got to know the dances of the different peoples, gathered experiences and motives.

The world-famous dance ensemble bearing Igor Moiseyev’s name was formed in 1937. The unique genre, the scenic folk dance came to life by plenty of excurtiating work. Specially skilled and trained dancers could only perform it and the group created a dance studio in 1943 in order to assure new generations.

The choreographer’s conception was to produce a combination of traditional folk dance and classical ballet applying it for a powerful expression of action. It was a hard struggle for the choreographer to push through his ideas against the professionals’ dismissal and it also took a long time to make the dancers find their own style.

These productions demanded specially talented and well-trained dancers, so a dance school was established to rise new generations of dancers. Getting into this dance company was hard and meant an appreciation for the ones who managed. Moiseyev himself did the selection procedures, in which his main viewpoints were the applicants’ talent, suitability and beauty (especially in case of girls).

The Company boasts several dance dynasties. To be a school-studio student is not the only way to become a Company artist. If you have talent, come and test yourself. The onlyproblem is not everybody can pass the test. The Moiseyev’s entire troupe gets together ’at the mirror’ – on the narrow bank along the mirrored wall – and examines the entrant from every side. ’Come on, show us what you can!’ One of the soloists sketches out a fanciful ’rope’.

Got it? Do it! If it’s success, the applicant is allowed to show a piece if his own. Moiseyev’s sharp ’Thank you!’ means an unconditional refusal. But if an interested ’Come up here…’ is heard, the new life begins.

The art of Igor Moiseyev was acknowledged by plenty of prestigeous awards. Folk artist of the Soviet Union, manytime State-Award winner, owner of the Lenin-award, of the award of the Dance Magazine and of the American Dance Oscar. He was also given the honorary membership of the French National Assembly and Moiseyev was also awarded in Hungary. By the occasion of celebrating.

The dance company has already staged nearly three-hundred shows so far and is still extremely popular in its home and in the whole world, too. Moiseyev’s group has alwas been characterised by the harmony of perfect preparedness, rich choreography, virtuosity, music, and the sensational sight of the stylized folk costumes.

The Group visited more than sixty countries and has been on more than one hundred and sixty external tours. In Budapest they has given thirteen performances since 1946 (last time in 2012), and always met with enormous success.
