With a superb cast and internationally acclaimed directors, Katona József Theatre is one of the major art theatres in Hungary. Katona stages classic Hungarian and international drama, as well as a selection of contemporary plays. Located downtown in vibrant District V, Katona is a vital part of Budapest’s cultural scene.

In late 2014 Katona offers an extensive programme with English subtitles and a special music-based variety.

The Misanthrope - With English subtitles

In Katona’s version of this classic play, with a minimal set, full attention is focused on the actors on stage: in the lead roles both Ernő Fekete, as an enigmatic Alceste, balancing on the edge of existence, and Eszter Ónodi, as Céliméne, the careless charmer give memorable performance, and the supporting cast populate the stage with a group of colorful and unlikely figures.

The play centred around a group of people, who believe all they need is light to survive. Representing the intellectual class, they aim to make the world better, help fellow people in the need - yet, they may struggle to understand or even see others.
