US Steps In Hungary Under Fire
The American Hungarian Federation has voiced criticism of steps taken to ban certain officials from entering the US, business daily Napi Gazdaság reported. In a letter addressed to Victoria Nuland, the US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, the federation said recent actions by the US could increase anti-US and anti-NATO sentiment in Hungary.

The federation asked Nuland why the US had taken such resolute steps against Hungary when international research shows that the country is far from being among the most corrupt countries in central and eastern Europe.

Meanwhile, Christian Democratic MP Péter Harrach said that what seem to be “coordinated attacks” against Hungary in Europe and on home ground can be attributed to political, economic and ideological motives.

Addressing a forum of Christian civil organisations, he said that the attackers were finding it hard to reconcile themselves to their electoral defeats earlier this year.

Harrach urged efforts to protect Hungary’s economic sovereignty and pursue a patriotic economic policy, including the repurchase of utility providers and a focus on boosting economic growth as against IMF austerity proposals.
