Hungarian Protesters Demand Dismissal Of Top Tax Officials
A large crowd of protesters gathered in front of tax authority NAV headquarters in Budapest’s 7th district on Sunday evening, demanding the removal of NAV leaders, including tax chief Ildikó Vida, who was recently banned from the US on corruption charges. Gábor Vágó, a former deputy of the green LMP party, said the entry ban by the United States of Hungarian officials was “the biggest scandal of the past decade”, and he demanded that the European Union should launch an investigation.

Addressing the crowd which he estimated at over 10,000, Vágó said that the government had been reluctant to investigate reports of major tax fraud and repeatedly called on leaders of the tax authority to step down.

Former NAV officer András Horváth called on the authorities to launch an investigation into the alleged fraud cases rather than looking to the US for evidence.

Vida will stay in her post, Economy Minister Mihály Varga told Hungarian public radio on Monday. Vida has been accused by the US without any evidence, Varga said and added that dismissing her from her office would be “the worst option”.

He insisted that the entry ban imposed by the United States was a cover for “some political motive”, and repeated the government’s request to US authorities to share their reasons for the ban.

The US authorities should indicate the case in which Vida is allegedly involved and Hungary will start an investigation without delay, the minister said.
