Hungarian Govt Official Denies Plans To Amend Law On Public Assembly
The government is not planning to amend the law on public assembly, and it especially has no endeavours to restrict the right of assembly, state secretary at the cabinet office László L Simon said.

Simon said that ruling Fidesz party official Gergely Gulyás had expressed a personal opinion earlier, which he has every right to do, when he said in an interview with daily Népszabadság at the end of December that Hungary’s laws on public assembly should be changed.

Simon added that the right of Hungarians to assemble freely without any restrictions has been one of the main achievements of the country’s democratic transition.

Gulyás insisted in the interview that the reason for amending the laws on public assembly would not be to respond to recent anti-government demonstrations.

He said changes would ban different demonstrations held at the same location and also limit their lengths.
