Govt Rejects Reports That Brussels Criticised Rural Development Programme
The government rejects press reports that the European Commission criticised Hungary’s programme for allocating European Union funding for rural development. “In reaction to claims that have come to light in the press, we consider it important to point out that the European Commission did not express criticism, but made professional observations with regard to the Rural Development Programme,” the cabinet office said in a statement.

It added that the commission proceeds in exactly the same manner in the case of all member states. Farm portal agrarszektor.hu said earlier the EC considered Hungary’s rural development programme “complicated”.

The EC thinks the plan contains too many planned measures, which puts its implementation at risk, according to the portal.

Talks on the programme with commission officials are continuing at an “intense” pace, the statement said, adding that the government aimed to conclude them as soon as possible.

“If necessary the Office of the Prime Minister will not wait for the official approval of the rural development programme, but could call some tenders before that, even at national risk,” it said.
