EU Launches Infringement Procedure Over Restrictions On Land Acquisition
The European Commission on Thursday launched infringement procedures against Hungary concerning restrictions on the acquisition of farmland in the country’s land act. The Commission has launched similar procedures in connection with the land acts of Bulgaria, Lithuania and Slovakia as well.

The Commission sent their official notifications to governments of the four countries, which have two months to respond.

Hungary’s agriculture ministry said in a statement that the government had designed the country’s new land act with a view to protecting Hungarian land, and it vowed to defend the legislation using all possible legal means.

It will respond as soon as it has considered full details of the case, it added.
