No EU-US Free Trade Pact Without National Consent
There should be no EU-US free trade pact without the consent of the EU member states’ parliaments, Hungary’s parliamentary speaker László Kövér told MTI in Rome after attending a conference of EU parliamentary speakers, focusing on the role national parliaments may play during negotiations on international treaties.

“An overwhelming majority of those representing the member states insisted that the series of negotiations cannot be concluded without the involvement of national parliaments.

Some Brussels decision makers, however, disagreed,” he said.

Kövér said that Hungary strongly opposes any plan to impose an omnipotent super-authority over Hungarian institutions, thereby handing ultimate power to global corporations.

Hungary also insists on maintaining its GMO-free status and the protection of Hungarian geographical names of origin.

Negotiations on the planned EUUS free trade agreement (TTIP) had long been conducted in secrecy and there is still powerful momentum to wrap them up as soon as possible, he said.

“You need not be a paranoid to see ulterior motives behind this attitude,” he said, adding that TTIP’s benefits expected under the best-case scenario are dwarfed by the danger to nation states.
