Hungary Hosts International Holocaust Event In London
Hungary, as the current president of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), hosted a large-scale international event remembering the Holocaust, in London. Szabolcs Takács, Hungary’s state secretary for EU affairs, said London was a symbolic venue for such an event as Britain had a very strong Jewish community from whom there was a lot to learn.

It is also very important that after two western countries, Canada and the UK, now two eastern Europeans, Hungary and Romania (next year), can hold the presidency of IHRA, he added at the event held at the House of Lords. “In these two countries it is only possible to openly talk about the Holocaust since the democratic transition,” he said.

Takács said it is a welcome fact that Hungary has the third largest “Jewish community of a long history” in Europe, after Britain and France. “For this reason we must be very active and committed and speak openly,” he said.
