Gyurcsány Urges Hungarians To “Lose Fear Of Refugees”
Hungarians should “lose their fear of refugees”, former prime minister and leader of the opposition Democratic Coalition party, told journalists in Brussels. Gyurcsány said he had been briefed by Dimitris Avramopoulos, the Greek EU commissioner, about EU plans to help alleviate the refugee situation in Italy and Greece.

He said Avramopoulos told him that the European Commission planned to distribute 40% of refugees residing in Italy and Greece—some 40,000 people—among other member states.

“I realise that a lot of Hungarians regard the refugee issue with concern,” he said, adding that nevertheless Hungary should comply with its duty as an EU member state out of “humanity, and driven by Christian conscience, if you like”.

“Hungary receives large amount of support from the EU each year and now it is asked to help receive 700- 800 people,” he said, adding that the strategy of only receiving from the EU without giving anything back is wrong.
