Can Poor Hungarian PISA Results In Reading Comprehension Be Reversed By Learning English?
The Hungarian education system was again cast in an unfavorable light with the recent release of PISA scores; these scores showed significant decline in Hungarian students’ reading comprehension and scientific knowledge, while their math skills remained stagnant and well below average.

This showing has challenged parents to figure out how their children will attain the academic progress they deserve and expect.

“It’s important that students are given the confidence, not just to understand written text, but also to analyze, evaluate, and critique,” comments David Shectman, Director of Education at the English School of Budapest (ESB).

He continued, “As the skills required for reading comprehension are universal, one proven way to bulk up Hungarian reading comprehension is to focus on a student’s English reading skill. Knowing that these skills are transferable across languages, we at the ESB focus on not only language acquisition, but the strengthening of all learning skills.”

ESB’s philosophy is that the acquisition of knowledge must be accompanied by a student’s determination and resolve to debate, analyze, and challenge written text.

The ESB teaches reading, writing, and spoken English in after school hours and bases their lessons upon the National Curriculum for England and Wales. www.englishschool.hu
