Now Showing In Budapest: 'The Beguiled'
"At a girls' school in Virginia during the Civil War, where the young women have been sheltered from the outside world, a wounded Union soldier is taken in. Soon, the house is taken over with sexual tension, rivalries, and an unexpected turn of events."

Movie type: Drama Western - This period drama is not quite the thriller that the trailers make it out to be, for it is more in line with the other, slower and more meditative work of writer/director Sofia Coppola. That said, this is probably her most mainstream accessible film. Fans of the top billed stars Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning will have plenty to enjoy here. Sexual content and general adult subject matter make the film strictly for adults, even with some younger girls in the cast.

Director: Sofia Coppola

Script: Sofia Coppola

Starring: John McBurney - Colin Farrell, Martha Farnsworth - Nicole Kidman, Edwina Dabney - Kirsten Dunst, Alicia - Elle Fanning

Length: 1 hr. 33 min.

Reated: R

Reviews:

Roger Ebert: “Very Good You can't write a thesis statement about what "The Beguiled" is about. It's not that kind of movie. But it's the kind of movie that lingers on in your head, just like the best fairy tales do.”

USA Today: “Average ... the drama amounts to an overly pretentious version of a sudsy made-for-TV movie, complete with bodice ripping. The Beguiled is slow to develop and never really cooks. As a period thriller, The Beguiled won't leave you hot but more likely bothered.”

Rolling Stone: “Very Good ...a Southern Gothic that simmers with violent undercurrents and dark, subversive wit. Laughs? You bet, though a few of them will stick in your throat. ...a sultry atmosphere of lacy beauty curdled by blood lust and the sound of battle off in the distance. But, oh, the war inside.”
Slant Magazine: “Above Average Sofia Coppola serves up a cautionary revenge tale told from multiple perspectives, and thus none at all. What results is her least audacious, and most conventionally respectable, work yet.”
