Hungarians Love Shopping Abroad
A growing number of Hungarians do their shopping in neighboring countries and the amount of money they spend abroad is consequently also increasing, according to data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH). The favorite country for shoppers is Austria.

According to figures released by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) and compiled by retail news portal blokkk.com, the amount spent by Hungarians during one-day travels to neighboring countries has continuously increased since 2014.
In the first six months of this year, the KSH registered 5.9 million trips abroad, of which 2.2 mln were made for shopping purposes. Hungarians spent a total of HUF 45 billion abroad, which represents a 15% increase year-on-year.

Hungariansʼ shopping expenditures in the first half amounted to HUF 22.4 bln in Austria, which is almost as much as in the full year 2014 and already more than half of the 2016 figure (HUF 40.6 bln).

Slovakia and Serbia have also proven popular destinations for shopping, where Hungarians spent HUF 6.6 bln and HUF 7.5 bln, respectively, in the first half of this year. Romania lags behind with a mere HUF 2.3 bln, blokkk.com reports.

As for the products purchased, during one-day trips abroad Hungarians spent 87% of their money on food, drink, expensive goods and fuel.
