"This neo-Gothic and Romantic building was built in the spirit of the English Gothic style in 1857 in accord with the fashion of the times. Its name was derived from its original dark grey colour. The gate and the gateway with its transverse ribs are the building's most notable features, next to the enclosed corner balcony.
The city casino which operated here between 1860 and 1865 was considered a hotbed of resistance against the absolutist rule. The Szeged National Council was formed in its library on 22 October 1918.
The painter Béla Endre was born in the building. He was one of the foremost figures, along with János Tornyai, of the Hódmezővásárhely art scene during its heyday and a founding member of the Artists' Majolica Colony right at the start of the 20th century.
Today, it houses the collections and exhibitions of the history department of the Ferenc Móra Museum."
