"Hungarians infected with HIV - an overall 2,075 registered cases - face discrimination in a number of situations, the Society for Civil Liberties (TASZ) said in a statement sent to MTI on Thursday, World AIDS Day.HIV positive patients are often refused various medical treatments when they reveal their health status, the statement said, adding that TASZ would report the discrimination to the Ombudsman as well as to the Equal Opportunity Authority, and request an investigation.
The statement also said that though the number of infections has shown a continuous increase over the years, Hungary "lags behind" other EU countries in terms of the number of HIV tests administered. The group also referred to the alarmingly high ratio of young people among new cases: 43 percent of them were under 30 in 2010.
State Secretary for health Miklos Szocska on Wednesday announced that the government would soon to present its national AIDS strategy, aiming to reduce the number of sexually transmitted new HIV infections by 25 percent in the next four years."
