Gently Does It

Gently Does It
"Bronwen Rees is a Buddhist and psychotherapist who is making the transition from England to Hungary more gradual than most.

Six years ago she met a Hungarian lady at a conference who told her, “I think you’ll become an important person in my life”. While many might have run a mile on hearing this, Bronwen wasn’t daunted and the pair stayed in touch. Through this friendship Bronwen was later introduced to Mireisz Laszlo, the founder of Europe’s first Buddhist University situated in Budapest.

Her connections to Hungary steadily grew, and she began to feel that, spiritually, there was something fascinating about the Magyars, but she wasn’t quite sure what to do with this fascination.

A few years ago however she received a call from a friend who said there was a house for sale in Nagykovácsi. More out of idle curiosity, she flew out with some cash in her back pocket and a whimsical expression on her face. Her return flight saw her with a significantly emptier back pocket and a look changed from curiosity to anxiety, the sort of look that says, “What have I just done?”

In the intervening time, Bronwen has converted her anxiety into an energy that has seen her house, which sits next to Nagykovácsi’s Yoga Studio, transformed into the East-West Sanctuary; a peaceful place for spiritual development.

She now lives there part time and organises retreats in the areas of Buddhism, Yoga, Meditation and Psychotherapy.

A particular interest for her is Javas Yoga, which uniquely draws influence from Buddhist and Hindu yoga as well as ancient Hungarian traditions and spirituality. It is a glorious mixture of astrology, yoga, meditation, ayurvedic medicine and diet.

She will be running an introduction to Javas for novices at the end of July. This is aimed at English speakers who have an interest in the spiritual side of life, but find they simply haven’t had the opportunity to give it much of a taste.

The retreat lasts for four days and helps participants learn how to balance their health and diet through analysis of their own bodily energies, astrological charts and personal history to create their own blueprint for a more holistic life. It also includes tarot reading, massage and a trip to the baths. So it’s a perfect opportunity to get better acquainted with the esoteric whilst also having a jolly nice relaxing time!"
