'Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra', National Concert Hall, 27 November
"The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra was the very first Scandinavian symphonic orchestra to be founded and 126 years later, it is still going strong. For its first fifty years it was directed by its founder Robert Kajanus, and between 1892 and 1923, gave virtually all of Jean Sibelius’s premières with the composer conducting.

Chief conductors of the Helsinki Philharmonic have included Paavo Berglund, Okko Kamu and Leif Segerstam, who is currently its honorary chief conductor. Since 2008, the orchestra has been led by violinist–conductor John Storgårds. The ensemble made its debut outside Finland at the 1900 Paris World Exhibition and since then has travelled the world.

French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet was born in Lyon in 1971. At the age of twelve, he began studies at the Paris Conservatoire with Aldo Ciccolini and three years later won the “Premier Prix du Conservatoire”. When he was eighteen he won the New York competition for young talents.

He works regularly with the world’s premiere orchestras and soloists, and ensembles and artists such as Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Los Angeles Philharmonic as well as Renée Fleming, Cecilia Bartoli, Angelika Kirchschlager, Yuri Bashmet, Joshua Bell, Julia Fischer and Truls Mørk.

Beyond Europe he has toured in the United States and has a large fan base in Australia. These days, he is also active as a jazz pianist. He is an exclusive Decca artist and has recorded over thirty records for its label.
