"Hungarian-Slovak high-level diplomatic moves indicated a souring of bilateral relations on Thursday.Foreign Minister Kinga Göncz summoned the Slovak ambassador Juray Migas to her office on Thursday to discuss anti-Hungarian remarks recently made by Slovak politicians. Göncz complained that ethnic Hungarian schools in Slovakia have barely been allocated EU subsidies and also objected to attacks launched against Hungarian Coalition Party president Pál Csáky.
Göncz said Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is politically responsible for the parties that make up his coalition and Budapest will consider further diplomatic moves next week.
The Slovak Foreign Ministry later rejected the Hungarian position and said Budapest is seeking confrontation. Slovak Foreign Minister Ján Kubis said raising the issue of autonomy is unacceptable to Slovakia, as such aspirations “will generate extremist and radical feelings.” Fico accused Hungary of provoking Slovakia.
Fico also criticised a meeting last week between Csáky and ethnic Hungarian bishop László Tőkés, at which they discussed the issue of autonomy, and said Hungary is provoking Slovakia because it has domestic problems."
