Hungarian State Folk Ensemble: Sun Legend, Festival Theatre, 17 May
"The creators of the dance production Sunlegend bring a wholly original, hitherto unseen world of sights and sounds to the Hungarian and international dance theatre stage. Sunlegend is a 21st century dance theatre production which, in a fresh and creative spirit, uses the distinctive tools of art to visualise the cult of the Sun and the part it plays in our lives, exploring the relationship between the sun’s celestial journey and the progress and turning points of human existence.

The choreographer Gábor Mihályi has melded together the most dynamic and captivating folk dance motifs from Hungary and elsewhere in Central and Eastern Europe and brought them to the stage with the cooperation of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble. In 2000, the Association of Hungarian Dance Artists awarded him the “Creator of the Year” prize for his work.

The production’s composer Nikola Parov, who has travelled the world as a soloist on the Riverdance project, has drawn on East European folk music traditions to create a novel and original musical palette wherein a perfect harmony is created through the sounds of the saxophone, drums, brass and violin. What emerges is a folk music composition in the world music style created through a magical mixture of dynamic performance, tradition and mysticism.
