Attila Ambrus, the man who gained fame as the “Whisky Robber” in the 1990s, was released from prison this Tuesday. Ambrus stole a total of Ft 196 million from 28 banks, post offices and travel agencies from January 23, 1993 and October 18, 1999 after moving from Transylvania to Hungary.Having escaped a Buda jail once, he was recaptured and sentenced to a 17-year penitentiary term.
He was placed in a high security prison, then was later transferred to a lighter security prison, due to his good behaviour, where he studied communications.
Ambrus earned his nickname for his habit of drinking a glass of whisky in a nearby bar before carrying out his robberies.
He told Népszabadság that he no longer drinks whisky and wants to live a sober life as he does not wish to tempt fate.
