Hungarian Women Cricketers Keep On Running

Hungarian Women Cricketers Keep On Running
"Thanks to two dramatic victories, the Comenius Anita Girls team are still in with a chance of winning the Second Division of the Hungarian Cricket League.

On 15th August a great fightback by captain Claudia Balogh gave the team the narrowest of victories over the all-male IBM team from Budapest. Then on 30th August some great running by Adrienn Zics and Fanni Cziraky helped them beat the all-Hungarian Tasmanian Devils with just two balls to go. In both matches the bowling was very accurate and the team spirit carried them through to gain full points.

The team has two matches to go. One against Baggy Blues Occasionals, a team of mainly-British expats living in Budapest, and the other against their rivals the Comenius Boys - they share the same training area, pitch and coach, but both teams will be going all-out for victory.

Since the Anita-Hungaria Women's Cricket Festival in June in Godollo, Hungarian women's cricket has developed and stabilised thanks to regular matches and training (in Budapest and Szekesfehervar). Some of the best players were invited to join the German girls team at their training camp in Vienna in August and played a match. Coach Andy Grieve has not only created a team that can compete with and beat male teams, he is also very active in arranging future matches and tournaments with teams in other central European countries - Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Slovakia.

The women's team will travel to Paris in October and the girls team will go to Bielefeld in Germany in November for the 1st Open Indoor Schools Championship. Next year the plans include hosting a full-scale international women's tournament in Sződliget, just north of Budapest, on Hungary's first full-size dedicated cricket pitch."
