Hungary To Claim Full Tokaj Brand Rights |
 "Hungary is expected to file its claim to the EU for the exclusive use of the wine brand name Tokaji on Monday, after failing to reach an agreement with Slovakia on the size of the region by the deadline on Friday, Tokaj Wine Region chairman Ferenc Marcinkó announced.Hungary was ready to compromise on extending the region to Slovakia, Marcinkó added. In 1908 the area of the defined wine region now in Slovakia was 174 hectares. Hungary was ready to accept 565.2 hectares, as agreed between Hungarian Agriculture Minister Imre Németh and Slovak Agriculture Minister Zsolt Simon in 2004, but the Fico government wanted 908 hectares, as defined in April 1959. Negotiations can be restarted in ten years, Marcinkó added."
