"Free Democrat chairman János Kóka said in a statement on Sunday that he fears the strong feeling in his party that irregularities took place at the party electoral convention last year. The statement admitted that certain delegates from Borsod county seemingly did not participate in the election legally, and did not cast their votes according to party statutes. He asked Szabolcs county party chapter leader Csaba Jüttner to conduct an inquiry and to issue a report within 30 days.
Kóka said he is ready to face a new election if the legitimacy of the party elections is brought into question, but will not discuss the matter until then. Fodor, who was the other candidate for the post of party chairman last year, said he will wait for the report.
Senior party official Péter Gusztos said the vote will have to be repeated in the event that wrongdoings are uncovered. Socialist Party spokesman István Nyakó stressed that “whether or not irregularities occurred at the Free Democrat convention is an internal party matter.”
