"The author of the 1914 report was Joseph Goldberger (1874-1929), a physician and epidemiologist, born in Hungary, emigrated to America with his parents when he was nine years old, the family settling in the Lower East Side in Manhattan. Goldberger attended the City College of New York, switched from engineering to medicine, and graduated from Bellevue Medical College at the age of twenty-one.
