"Palestinian dentist Saleh Tayseer is demanding Ft 30 million in compensation from the state over his detention in 2004 on suspicion of plotting to carry out a terrorist act. He was eventually released after three months when proceedings against him were terminated due to lack of evidence.Tayseer, the imam of Budapest’s Islamic community, was arrested a few hours before the arrival of Israel’s then-president Moshe Katsav on April 13, 2004, as he was suspected of wanting to blow up the Budapest Jewish museum. He had inquired about obtaining explosives in November 2003.
The highest compensation for unlawful custody to date was paid by the Justice Ministry to Ferenc Burka and his son in an out-of-court settlement in January 2007. The two spent six years in jail after they were convicted of manslaughter before it was discovered that someone else had committed the crime.
They were paid Ft 20 million and Ft 25 million, respectively. Tayseer’s lawyer aims to prove with tax declarations that the arrest cost the dentist a considerable amount of revenue."
