"National Police chief József Bencze on Friday instructed Budapest Police to patrol metro stations and trams from March 1 in view of a rise in crime on public transport vehicles.As one-third of those who died in acci-dents last year were cyclists and pedestrians, police will increase checks at zebra crossings and bicycle lanes.
Budapest Police chief Gábor Tóth said 104,000 crimes were committed in Budapest last year, a 3% drop. Car theft was down 20% in the city, and burglaries and thefts also dropped. The number of other robberies went up by 3.4% while white-collar crimes were up 10%.
Budapest continues to have a shortage of nearly 700 police officers."
