Press Statement - British Embassy

"With regard to articles which have appeared recently in the international press, including comments about Russian-Hungarian relations wrongly attributed to British diplomats, the British Embassy in Budapest issues the following statement:

The British Government is not 'concerned' by Hungary's relationship with Russia, nor by Mr Gyurcsany's relations with Mr Putin.

In an EU context the Hungarian Government has supported UK over recent issues concerning our relations with Russia, such as the Litvinenko case and the threat to the British Council. We are grateful for and satisfied by this support.

We do not comment on personnel appointments or intelligence matters. The appointment of the head of the NBH is an internal matter for Hungary."
