Tango Sensual, National Concert Hall, 29 August |
"The roots of tango music are immensely diverse: it evolved in the late 19th century and its dominant elements grew from Spanish based Argentinean folk music motifs, European dances such as the polka and mazurka, and also African rhythms. These days, we can hear tango outside the country of its birth, in many countries of Europe, America and Asia in concerts, as a theatrical genre or at milongas (tango dance evenings).
These days, the Northern hemisphere most closely associates tango music with the name of Astor Piazzolla. He created his music, the tango nuevo from a unification of jazz and serious music.
As a dance genre, tango makes for a gripping audience spectacle. The precise, dizzying and often erotic motion of the legs is breathtaking to see. In Argentinean tango, everything can be found that occurs between a man and a woman.
