The 2013 Hungarian Design & Design Management Awards
The 2013 Hungarian Design and Design Management Awards were announced on the 30th September in Kunsthalle Budapest. A leading program of Budapest Design Week, the award ceremony is also the opening of the exhibition displaying the awarded and the most distinguished works of the competition.

Announced for the fifth time, the Design Management Award was presented by Dr. Miklós Bendzsel, president of the Intellectual Property Office and the Hungarian Design Council to the leader of Cserpes Cheese Workshop Ltd. Three more entrants of the competition received a certificate: the Hungarian State Opera, BKK (Centre for Budapest Transport) and LOFFICE. In connection with this year's contestants, the jury stressed that these companies significantly differing in size, structure, and field of operation, all found it important to have a corporate image deliberately developed by experts from the fields of design, marketing and communication.

The Hungarian Design Awards, the most prestigious recognition of the Hungarian design profession were announced for the 34th, this time by Gábor Orbán, State Secretary responsible for tax and financial policy at the Hungarian Ministry of National Economy and Dr. Miklós Bendzsel, president of the Intellectual Property Office and the Hungarian Design Council
Two winners were announced in the product category of the Hungarian Design Awards.

DSI Inhalo is a dry salt inhalator that is a real treasure in the contemporary world of health-consciousness, in connection with which the jury stressed the elaborate design process based on the cooperation of several experts: according to their opinion the product proves that “design is not »simply designing the product itself«, but a very complex process”. Petra Földi also received a product category award for her raincoat collection that is characterised by a clear, functional design and high quality material use, as well as professional technology.

In the concept category a logical game called Faces designed by Zsanett Benedek and Dániel Lakos using the basic elements of spatial forms, more precisely triangular disks modelled by computers received an award, while the visual communication category was won by an interactive book adapting the classic tale of Little Rooster and his Diamond Halfpenny.

In the student category the LightMe lamp collection inspired by stacks of wood used when setting up a fire was awarded. According to the jury, its strength is the completeness of its design that involves designing all the elements needed, an idea for brand-building, as well as economic packaging. The DORA bicycle helmet designed by Balázs Dániel Filczer was also acknowledged in the student category. The work of the young designer makes the nowadays increasingly popular cycling safer: offers a very functional solution of high aesthetic value and simple use.

Following on the traditions of previous years, in 2013 several organisations offered special prizes for the participants of the Hungarian Design Awards. One of the special prizes of the State Secretariat for Culture of the Ministry of Human Resources was given to Anna Farkas, graphic designer for the visual communication of her Starry Light by Anagraphic lamp, the magical result of her product design experiment.

The other special prize of the State Secretariat announced in the student category was awarded to two graphic image designs. Klára Balázs received it for her JAT project, the documentation material of the Attila József Plan, while Zsófia Szabó for her diploma work, the Kis Hungarikumhatározó series (literal translation: Small Hungaricum Vocab) that is an exciting novelty in the world of Hungarian souvenirs.

For the special prize of the HIPAVILON Hungarian Intellectual Property Agency Nonprofit Ltd., putting a work that is ready for production into the limelight was a very important aspect. The designer of the Shin Eco Furniture family that fits well in the most recent international trends, György Gyimóthy received the prize for his elaborately developed plan that also takes production issues into consideration.

The special prize of the Hungarian Design Council was awarded to two young designers earlier studying at the Technical University of Budapest: Péter István Varga and Renáta Paunoch for their Zigza concrete bench system. By turning, mirroring, and so on, a unique, coherent group of benches can be created.
