'The Diary Of An Expecting Mother 7.- Birth experience' By Mamarose
"Kata Szili’s been keeping a diary of her experiences with MamaRose, the obstetrics department of Dr. Rose Private Hospital. Here’s how it's all been going.

I’ll start at the end. This is the afternoon of day 4 and everybody in the family – except me – is sleeping like a baby. We were let come home 3 days ago – the 19th of May when Adam was 12 hours old: he was born at 3.55 in the morning with 4120 grams and 58 cm. Shortly, I can recall the following story:

With doctor Illanitz we agreed to meet Thursday (the 19th of May) and see what we can do to finally have Adam out here. We both understood that he is most likely bigger than 4 kg and considering my sizes and my previous birth experience any additional days waiting would mean a risk for me as well as for the baby. The funny thing is that the day before Évi the sonographer gave me a call to ask to meet an hour earlier to make sure we will have time to prepare and asked how I felt: a few hours later – following the advices of my mother-in-low about having a hot bath – the contractions spontaneously started.

At 7.30 pm I started to feel the well-known pains which followed each other in every 10 minutes. It quickly moved down into 5-7 minutes and when the 3 minutes period appeared Tamas urged me to go into the hospital. Well, I was concerned a bit, I thought there’s no way we are so close that such a rush is needed. I called Erzsike – the midwife – anyway, and by 10.30pm we were in.

The doctor showed up, too and immediately recommended breaking the water as it would significantly ease and speed up the following hours. And pretty much that was about it. Everything went so smoothly – no hormones, no medicines, no doctor interventions of any kind – I couldn’t believe it. A little bit of epidural anaesthesia helped me to relax for 30 minutes or so (and forget the urban legend of its consequences); after that I felt already the urge to push. And unbelievably – many thanks to Erzsike – no cuts were necessary; with slow and controlled delivery there was enough time and space to stretch.

So finally after a very natural and pieceful birthing experience Adam was there with us. It was dusking and it promised to be a very nice, early summer day. The family apartment gave us enough room and privacy to relax – mostly Tamas and Adam were sleeping as I just was not able to.

And since according to the doctors it was a “study-book” delivery we could leave the hospital the very same day. While after the birth of Petra I was struggling for weeks not being strong enough to take a shower or not having enough time to eat and brush my teeth now it’s all different. Not to mention the comfort and safety those home-visits made by the paediatrician and nurse meant. But I will update you about this a little later.

It turned out to be the first real summer weekend with temperatures around 30 and yesterday I already felt strong enough to take Petra to have an ice cream while Adam was sleeping at home."
