"Abádszalók is among the most visited holiday resorts at Lake Tisza and has the largest free bathing area (which is extra fun in winter!). The settlement possesses a true rarity in the form of the Doll Museum (Babamúzeum) and the bobbin lace made here is world famous. The name 'Abád' was first mentioned in Anonym's Chronicle as Obad, an important crossing on the River Tisza. The once separate settlements of Tiszaabád and Tiszaszalók were unified in 1897.
The damming of the River Tisza at Kisköre had a determining effect on the town. As a result, Abádszalók since 1989 has experienced a rapid development as a holiday resort at Lake Tisza. The largest developed free public beach on the 14-kilometre long Attila Bay (Attila-öböl) lies next to the town.
Several folk art craftspeople work here in the town. The bobbin lace made here is renowned and was still an important way of earning a living until 40-50 years ago.
Over a hundred and fifty bird species have been identified in the area. Among the natural assets of particular significance is a flock of sand martins in the protected area of Abád. The hundred-year old oak wood in the Elizabeth Grove (Erzsébet-liget) conjures up the bygone forest world of the Great Plain and is also under protection.
How to get there:
By public transport, the town is served eight from Kál-Kápolna (on the Budapest-Debrecen line). Abádszalók is also served with buses i.e from the Tiszafüred bus terminal. By car turn off Route 31 at Heves and continue to Kisköre, or take Route 4 and turn north at Fegyvernek or Kenderes towards Kunhegyes."
