"The arboretum is the most varied part of the 17.5 hectare botanical garden. A thousand trees and shrubs are nurtured here, the most attractive amongst them is a collection of pines. The oldest dawn redwood in Hungary can also be found here. The garden is structured according to the vegetation zones of Hungary. A section extends to the vegetation of the gentle hill slopes of Transdanubia, another is dedicated to the plant communities of the steeper hills of Northern Hungary: the Bükk, the Mátra, the Buda Hills, and the Balaton Uplands. A rich collection is representative of the Balkans and the Mediterranean region. Here, visitors may wander between evergreens like lemon trees and laurels, oleander and palm trees, jasmines and cedars.
The garden's most beautiful section is the lake with its lukewarm water, its water lilies, and the most gorgeous Indian lotus. The latter blossoms in July, and in this month not only its giant leaves but also the lovely rose flowers cover the entire water surface. A small island next to the lake is reserved for the dainty flora of the Carpathian Mountains and the Eastern Alps.
Behind this lake there is a second, smaller lake: the water lily pond above which an alpine garden with rare plants has been established. Next to the pond the fragrant rose garden, the 'Rosarium' boasts 120 varieties; it is a truly magnificent experience to marvel in the wonderfully colourful and scented environment of 1000 roses.
Several types of palm trees are kept in greenhouses, amongst them the most interesting are the date palms, windmill palms, fan palms and coconut palms. Naturally the orchids are amongst the attractions of the garden, in particular the tiger orchids with their large flowers. During the summer months these can be enjoyed outside on racks next to the large lake. The botanical garden also maintains a large collection of cactuses.
A taxonomic exhibition is also available to visitors of the botanical garden."
