"Much of this region belongs to the Zala Hills which form the southwest of the Transdanubian Hills. The River Mura forms the border to the south towards Croatia and the River Zala to the east. The strongly articulated landscape is made up of innumerable hills; the highest stands 338 metres in height. The typical ground cover is coniferous (with many recently established plantations) and oak forests.
Thanks to the search for oil started here in the 1930's thermal waters were also discovered. Most of the several hundred oil wells also allowed the exploitation of the curative waters and thus a number of baths and spas including Zalakaros, Bázakerettye and Kehidakustány were established around these water sources. Many tourists visit Zalaegerszeg too for the abundance of heritage and museums found here."
