Nobel laureate author Imre Kertész died at age 86 after a long and serious illness, the publisher Magvető said. The novelist, essayist and translator was the first Hungarian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, becoming a Nobel laureate in 2002.

In Europe there is not such a complex and broad family support system as is found in Hungary, the minister of human resources told a conference on Tuesday, marking International Women’s Day. Zoltán Balog told the event that 4 percent of the Hungarian budget is devoted to providing financial support for families as against the European average of 2.5 percent.

The law in effect since January 1, 2012 originally recognised only 14 congregations as established churches but allowed other faiths to apply to parliament for recognition, dependent on the vote of a two-thirds majority.
