There Should Be More Women Among Members Of Hungarian Parliament - A Commentary

Exactly 19 of the 199 members of Hungary's new parliament are women. That comes to 9.5 percent, a ratio that speaks for itself. Looking for an adjective to describe the situation I thought of ridiculous, untenable and infuriating but finally settled for humiliating as the word that best describes what I feel when thinking of this 9.5 percent ratio.

The „male dominance” of the previous years has almost entirely vanished from the online world as the ratios of the two sexes have equalised. The Internet usage habits of Hungarian men and women are mostly in line with those in the European Union in general. The term vitamin D is a bit of misnomer as it’s not really a vitamin; a scientist in the 1920’s mistakenly linked cod liver oil with the prevention of rickets in dogs. Little did they surmise that in fact vitamin D comes from sunshine by interacting with our skin, then circulating through the body. It acts beneficially on tissue and organs, not only assisting with maintenance but also repair.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the burial of József Antall, the first democratically elected prime minister of Hungary after the fall of communism. I remember well the day of his funeral, arriving as it did just a few days before Christmas. Hungary was a nation in mourning.

Lately I have been struck by the high number of incidents, often resulting in death, involving relatives or people living in the same household. A daughter kills her mother, an 85-year-old former high-ranking police officer kills his 79-year-old wife, a professional soccer player kills his partner and her son in a family dispute. These are only three cases I remember from the last two weeks or so.
