Budapest taxi drivers demonstrated against ride-hailing service Uber. The drivers blocked traffic in two lanes out of six on Elisabeth Bridge with a demand that Uber be banned and regulations enforced. The government is acting to ban access to the Uber application and website and those of similar taxi service companies, Development Ministry state secretary János Fónagy announced on Friday. He said the cabinet approved a bill to that effect on Wednesday that will be filed in Parliament on Monday.

Drivers belonging to ride-hailing service Uber must comply with Hungarian legal regulations as well as travel-safety and tax rules, an economy ministry official said. András Tállai, state secretary for tax affairs, said that people who use the service should be wary since they cannot know when a driver received his driving licence or what state of repair his vehicle is in.

Taxi drivers demonstrating against car dispatcher Uber in central Budapest closed a section of Andrássy Avenue and Bajcsy Zsilinszky Road, on Monday. The protesters completely blocked traffic in both directions of the two major routes but reopened one lane in each direction after the Budapest police warned them that a complete blockade was illegal.
