In the evening of 20 August, the day that marks the anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian State, more than half a million people watched the ceremonial fireworks display held on the Danube Banks. The ceremonial events attracted much attention and were held in high spirits; thousands of tourists were able to share the festive atmosphere of one of Hungary’s greatest national holidays.

The celebrations will begin on August 19 when the 'Street of Hungarian Flavours' will open at noon between the Buda side of the Erzsébet híd and Bem tér. Awards will be presented for Hungary’s best cake, sugar-free cake and ice cream. Pop music will play on Clark Ádám tér and on Bem tér from 8pm. "More than 700 buildings normally closed to the public, in 270 municipalities, will be open to visitors this coming Saturday and Sunday to mark Cultural Heritage Days it was announced this week. One of the prominent sights will be the presidential palace in Buda Castle, along with the National Bank, several embassies, and the Patent Office.
