Tosca was an eagerly awaited piece, but its eventual reception was lukewarm. It was only gradually that this fast-paced work, often called an action opera, became a box-office success. Géza Csáth, who wrote about it a few years after the Italian premiere, credited Puccini with a comprehensive and thorough knowledge of theatre, music and the extremely complex psychological processes of reception.
