The city of Debrecen, in eastern Hungary, will submit a bid to be a European Capital of Culture in 2023, Debrecen Mayor László Papp said. The mayor said that his city had aspired for the title in 2010, but Pécs, in southern Hungary, was selected instead. This time round the title will be shared with a city in the United Kingdom.

A Hungarian city or town will have the possibility to become a European Capital of Culture in 2023, the human resources minister said on Friday, inviting cities and towns to submit their bids already this year. The American Charles Bernstein and the Italian Giuseppe Conte were presented the Janus Pannonius Grand Prize for Poetry at a ceremony in Pécs, southwest Hungary. Bernstein’s poetry was praised for being “unexpected, radical, provocative, complex, dexterous, and contemporary” in a laudation at the ceremony.
