'The story of Carmen, the emotional extremes of the characters and Bizet's music are very powerful and inspirational. For me, the main inspiration comes from the abrupt shifts in the story and the music. I feel an affinity with the unpredictability and impulsiveness of the characters, which derives from their overwrought emotional condition.

Now on until 25 June. A comprehensive array of avant-garde art from the former Yugoslav states and neighbouring countries, focusing on the Cold War era. The selected pieces are from the private collection of Marinko Sudac, which, in addition to items of art and groups of works, also comprises complete documentations and archives of great historical significance.

Budapest and Vienna will jointly host the tenth Armel Opera Festival from June 28 to July 4, the festival director said. The festival will start in Budapest’s Thália Theatre with Rufus Wainwright’s Prima Donna performed by the Pécs-based Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra, Ágnes Havas said.

The number of foreign students enrolled at Hungarian universities this academic year has increased to more than 28,000 and could reach 40,000 by 2023, daily Magyar Idők said on Thursday, citing a study presented at a conference at Budapest’s Corvinus University.
