The government has decided to cap the price of petrol and diesel at 480 forints (EUR 1.3) per litre from Nov. 15, the prime minister’s chief of staff has said. Putting a cap on fuel prices may boost the economy and help to reduce inflation, Gergely Gulyás told a regular government press briefing.

Thanks to government mandated cuts to utility fees, Hungary has the second lowest price of natural gas in the European Union based on purchasing power parity (PPP), Fidesz MP Szilárd Németh told a press conference in Budapest. Whereas in 2010 Hungary was the country where consumers had to pay the most for gas in the EU, now only Romania has lower gas prices, based on PPP exchange rates.
