Újbuda Jazz Festival, Budapest, 3 - 5 September
"The first night of the Újbuda Jazz Festival features a tremendous young Hungarian jazz saxophonist's quartet with his first class musicians along with the living legemd of the European jazz, Peter Brötzmann featuring his most explosive formation, the Full Blast.

Full Blast - Brötzmann, Wertmüller, Pliakas (D/CH)

An aggressive, emotive free jazz trio, Full Blast is another of reedman Peter Brötzmann's touring and recording configurations and includes the explosive rhythm section of Marino Pliakas on electric bass and Michael Wertmüller on drums.

Wertmüller and Brötzmann toured with each other for years as a duo, and Wertmüller and Pliakas worked with each other frequently on various festival gigs, as well. The trio issued a debut album, the self-titled Full Blast, in 2006 on the German Jazzwerkstatt imprint, following it with Black Hole on Atavistic in 2009.

Tóth Viktor Four - pictured above

"Viktor Toth is one of the most talented musicians in the young generation of jazz artists in Hungary” said the press when reviewing his 2007 Climbing with Mountains, which, incidentally, won best jazz album of the same year. Despite this, he still sees himself as a truth seeker and with his musical endeavors seeks to reach oneness with universal harmony.

As Toth has played with such internationally renowned musicians as Hamid Drake (drums), Henry Franklyn (bass), William Parker (bass) and Mihaly Dresch (sax), he has garnered respect as a peer and has grown as a musician from these collaborations. His musical expression is dynamic yet sensitive and he strives to capture the energy of the moment with every performance.

He has played throughout Europe and the United States in various jazz festivals. He leads his own Toth Viktor Tercett, he composes his own material, he produces music for contemporary dance performances and he collects folk music… He is always looking to forge ahead in new directions.

The Tóth Viktor Four was formed in 2002 and consists of Tóth Viktor on sax, Cseke Gábor on piano, Szanday Mátyás on bass and Mohay Gábor on drums. The members of the band met in the Jazz Department of the Music Conservatory and have played in other bands previously. The Tóth Viktor Quartet plays a combination of bebop, hard bop, main stream standards as well as a smattering of their own compositions.

The band works together in alI its endeavors and tries to bear in mind the genius of the musical works composed by Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, the Miles Davis Quintet and John Coltrane it interprets. The Tóth Viktor Quartet always tries to create a complex sound in its musical formation while the performances themselves are at once improvisational, creative, dynamic and dnving."
