Eleftheria Arvanitaki, Bartók Béla National Concert Hall Budapest, 5 October
"Today, Eleftheria Arvanitaki has perhaps the best known Greek voice in the world. Her charismatic personality has not just conquered international concert halls: she has been one of the most loved singers in her native country since the eighties. Her concerts offer a unique experience and you don’t have to know Greek not to be moved by the passion and clarity of her vocal style.

She started in the late seventies, singing to friends in a taverna when her remarkable voice was discovered. She sings traditional rembetika songs which is the most characteristic style of Greek urban music. Since then, she has established herself as one of the leading rembetika performers, but her repertoire extends from jazz to rock via African music and much else besides.

Her voice has inspired great Greek and international composers, and she made her latest record – a selection of Spanish, Cuban, Greek and other compositions – with two time Grammy winner, Javier Limon.

Whatever style she performs in, the Greek tradition is always subtly present. Besides rock rhythms, we can sense the bitterness and melancholy of rembetika, which like other traditional urban musical genres such as tango and fado, talks of the difficulties of poverty.

This beautiful singer has spent recent decades touring the world and many hundreds of millions heard her at the closing ceremony of the Athens Olympics. Philips Glass chose her for his work Orion which was written for the Athens Cultural Olympics.
