Xpat Review: Fiktív Really Is One Of Budapest’s Coziest Pubs
Walk along the busy bar-filled street of Krudy Gyula u., just off Mikszáth Kalmán Tér, and you’ll bump into one of Budapest’s least known pubs – and certainly one of its coziest. The Fiktív Pub has been on the corner of Horánszky u. since 2007, but it’s already one of the most popular places in this resurgent area of the 8th District. I popped in on a cool and rainy Saturday evening, and found the atmosphere warming and welcoming. The dark wood paneling and cream-colored walls create an ambiance suitable for a gathering of old friends or a place to meet new ones.

The Fiktív has a bar stocked for all occasions, and offers food and drink specials every week. The Guinness was only 790 forints for a 0.5L korso when I was there, a 20% savings from most of the other bars in town.

And the Fiktív also serves tapas - what a nice surprise when you’re not in the mood for a full meal, but want something more than just crisps or peanuts. I immediately ordered the Garlic Shrimp and the Olives, both on special that week.

They were just enough to satisfy a small appetite, and each dish contained enough garlic to ensure a vampire-free month.
Fiktív’s venue is not large, with only four tables on the main floor, but there is plenty of space at the raised bar tables around the room.

Also, there is a loft which has another dining area, plus a some comfortable sofas and chairs for more relaxed conversations.

Overall, the atmosphere is mellow and intimate. The menu offers a nice selection of local and international dishes, and there are even vegetarian meals for the health-conscious drinkers; the Veggie Burger is especially nice.

The changing specials can be found online at: www.fiktivpub.hu. It’s a nice change from the bigger, noisier bars in the city, and just what the doctor ordered for a rainy evening in Budapest.
