Settings - Models, Palace Of Arts Budapest, Shown Until 28 October
"Setting is a special type of building. Sometimes it is not even a building. There were times when there were no settings in theatres at all, because the theatre itself was the frame for the play.

Setting is a special building, because it has to fit closely to the play, but it cannot “act” the story on its own. So the setting has to fit the atmosphere of the performance;, what is more, it defines the atmosphere of the performance, but it should not disclose too much. And it has to meet many practical requirements. The stage should be safe and easy to light, build and disassemble. And you should not forget about its price, either.

What about a model? A model is a special object. It has to display the setting, we should see its functional characteristics, it should be aesthetically judgeable - but it is not good, if a modellis too ready, because then it becomes a separate work of art, although its only aim is that the artists and technicians should be able to make judgements about the constructed setting with its help.

It is a real theatrical paradox that a model is often a single depiction of the setting, prepared after the play. This is how a model mutates from a depiction of the future to the representative of the past.
