Hungary's President Schmitt Accused Of Plagiarism
"Most of President Pal Schmitt's doctoral thesis was copied from a study by a Bulgarian sports researcher, HVG alleges. The president's office firmly rejected the accusation. Some 180 of Schmitt's 215-page dissertation submitted in 1992 agree practically word-for-word with the text of a 1985 French-language work by Bulgarian sports researcher and diplomat Nikolay Georgiev, according to the weekly.

Schmitt submitted his thesis on the modern Olympic games to the University of Physical Education in 1992. He received the highest mark, and was later made an honorary professor at the university.

LMP spokesman Gabor Vago said Schmitt will have to resign immediately if the report is true.

The presidential office said Schmitt knew Georgiev well and that the two co-operated during their researches in the course of discussing many details."
