New Drive Against Domestic Violence In Hungary
"Private citizen Pálma Halász and associates began a petition drive on March 1 to collect signatures to make domestic violence within the family a crime. An official announcement on the petition drive will be made today.

Halász started a similar campaign in the summer of 2010 but failed to get the requisite 50,000 supportive signatures.

If 50,000 signatures are collected in two months, then Parliament will have to address the topic, albeit with no obligation to legislate.

Last year 44 women died as a result of domestic violence in Hungary, and there were 58 such cases in 2009, according to the National Police.

The number of women in Hungary who have been injured by their partner or former partner is estimated at half a million.

A Eurobarometer survey in 2010 found that 77% of Hungarians would prefer tougher laws against domestic violence."
