Hungarian Filmmaker Tarr Shuts Down Production Company
Acclaimed director Béla Tarr is closing his production house T.T. Filmműhely from the end of May, he and business partner Gábor Téni announced in a statement on Thursday. They said that despite all their efforts they are obliged to realise that their position has become untenable.

Tarr said he does not consider the Hungarian National Film Fund established by the government legitimate as it has only political legitimacy.

He told Népszabadság that he will not seek financial aid from the Fund, and in the absence of funds they cannot support their company.

Tarr’s recent films include The Turin Horse, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2011 Berlin film festival.

He has objected in the past to changes in state financing introduced by commissioner Andrew Vajna, saying they go too far in promoting commercial considerations ahead of artistic productions.
