Invitation: Rupa &, The April Fishes, Festival Theatre, 31 May
Although Rupa Marya was born on the American West Coast and has Hindi origins, she could easily pass as French on the basis of her albums. After travelling and completing her university education, she settled in San Francisco, where she founded a band alongside her work as a doctor. Of course we are more interested in her music – and there is a lot to see and hear from this tiny but fiery lady and her band in concert.

Rupa & The April Fishes know everything there is to know about Latin music but dislike being pigeon-holed into any particular genre. They will happily play Mexican music embedded in a chanson, Balkan reggae rhythms or throbbing ska – and all this in no less than four languages.

They adapt the instrumentation accordingly, bringing the absolute maximum out of cello, accordion, trumpet, drums, acoustic guitar and bass. The quieter and more emotional aspects of their music are equally represented alongside the more rhythmic work in the band’s repertoire, sometimes within the same track.

Their first album, entitled Extraordinary Rendition, already revealed the band’s talent in full, but their next recording Este Mundo, released in 2009, went even deeper, perhaps deeper than any other Latin band currently performing. The whole experience is so tight and emotionally charged that laughing and crying along with the band suddenly seems only natural. Rupa & The April Fishes put on one of the best stage shows in the genre.
