US Concerned By Right-Wing Extremism In Hungary
Social discrimination and exclusion of Roma and forceful right-wing extremism are the biggest human rights problems in Hungary, the US State Department declares in its annual report on Hungary. The report, made public on Thursday, states that right-wing extremism has grown, including campaigns by paramilitary organisations aimed at intimidating Roma and promoting hatred of them and other minorities.

On another issue, the report observes that the cabinet has begun to apply a new law which restricts media freedom as it more broadly confirms its control over the media.

Regarding the new Basic Law and the over 20 cardinal laws passed, the report says new regulations on the judicial system, religious organisations and media freedom have confirmed concerns that the legislation could undermine Hungary’s democratic institutions by removing important checks and balances.
